Why a Sleep Study?:
Based on your doctor's recommendations and your insurance requirements, you are scheduled to have a sleep study performed to help you better understand why your sleep habits are negatively impacting your health and life. Whether your symptoms include chronic snoring, daytime sleepiness, trouble falling asleep, falling asleep at inappropriate times, or another sleep related condition, having a sleep study performed can help determine why you are having trouble so that you can start getting the treatment you need to improve your health.
What to Expect:
The night of your in-lab study a technician will apply small sensors to your head and body that will have attached wires connecting the sensors to a computer. (The wires will allow enough room for movement while you sleep.)  An Elastic belt may be wrapped around your chest and abdomen to measure breathing and a clip will be placed on your finger to monitor oxygen levels in your bloodstream.  The sleep technician will monitor you and your measurements throughout the entire study.  If the technician suspects that you have obstructive sleep apnea, you may be fitted for a mask and set up with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine during the second half of the night.
Testing, scheduling and treatment options may be dependent on your ordering provider and your insurance company.
